The article describes the history of the Smith Hemingway house which was originally built in Watertown, Connecticut in 1780, moved to Indian Hill in 1953, and has now been disassembled and prepared to be resurrected somewhere else in the future. A day steeped in tradition… It was our pleasure to join the @camargohunt this morning at their annual #BlessingOfTheHounds event, at the Little Red School House in Indian Hill. The hounds and riders were blessed by the priest before heading into the woods on the hunt. No foxes spotted today, but the snow made for a majestic atmosphere all around us. Several members of our team manned the bar at the after hunt lunch as Daley Design + Build was the bar sponsor. Our Crabtree foundation was poured last week and it is an impressive sight. This is one of the most complex foundations that we have poured to date including numerous exterior porch areas (some that will be structural slabs), and three large window wells integrated into the pour. Schultz Custom Wall got the job done for us yet again! Every now and then you need to escape from the daily grind and get some inspiration. This week we visited Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater in Mill Run, Pennsylvania. Built in 1935 for the Kaufmann family, this house cantilevers out over the creek which babbles by underneath. Wright’s signature horizontal lines are pervasive throughout the structure, with extensive use of locally sourced stone. Footers and schedule 35 drain tile are installed at our #CT3 home. We’re currently starting to fill in the subslab 1” washed gravel in preparation for foundation wall forming which will start very soon. We use 1” washed gravel under our slabs to ensure that there are proper, large enough voids in between the stones for water to travel through. Some builders will use pea gravel to save some money, and others will use cracked limestone “chips” to save even more money (which we won’t even do). These mounts ensure that underground downspout conductor pipes are properly spaced from the foundation and properly aligned, so that the vertical downspouts align perfectly with vertical trim boards. These mounts also ensure that the pipe doesn’t move laterally if the ground around the underground pipes settle.
